Luke Gross Award

Luke Gross (Top Right) and the Troopers Cabin – Camp POSTCARD 2017

Deputy Luke Gross served as a beloved leader at Camp POSTCARD for over 20 years, known for his boundless energy, adventurous spirit, and his heart for kids. A true big kid at heart, Luke brought joy, compassion, and a sense of fun to everything he did. To him, life was an adventure best shared with others, especially those in need.

Luke was deeply committed to his work as a police officer, and his dedication extended far beyond duty. He cared deeply for the people he served, particularly the students and families in his community. His passion for working with children helped bring the DARE program to local schools, further demonstrating his belief in education, connection, and prevention.

Colleagues remember Luke most for his kindness, empathy, and unwavering commitment to his family. He was the kind of person who would do anything for his loved ones, and his legacy of care and community continues to inspire those who knew him.

Deputy Luke Gross died in the line of duty on September 23, 2021. His legacy lives on at Camp POSTCARD, where he is remembered for his humor, respect, adventurous spirit, and leadership.

Luke had a simple but powerful philosophy at camp: “My kids will have fun!” Whether they were lining up for activities or playing Uno before bed, Luke made sure every camper had the chance to participate and enjoy themselves. It wasn’t about being the best—it was about trying your best. He encouraged effort, exploration, and joy, all delivered with discipline and kindness.

Beginning in 2022, Camp POSTCARD honors Luke’s legacy through an annual camper award. Activity leaders select one camper who best embodies Luke’s spirit, not necessarily the most skilled, but the one who steps out of their comfort zone with courage and a constant smile that shows they’re truly having fun.

The selected camper receives a Camp POSTCARD backpack filled with some of Luke’s favorite things—candy, board games, and more surprises that reflect his playful and generous nature. Additionally, a plaque bearing the names of each year’s honorees is proudly displayed at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, where Luke served with distinction.
