Volunteers of America Northern New England provides services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We believe that each among us is unique and valuable, and we encourage growth by honoring personal strengths and choices. Our goal is to help those we support live full and happy lives and foster independence in their community.
Our residential home provides 24-hour supervision by trained support staff. The professional staff respond to the self-care needs of the residents by coaching them to be self-sufficient and independent to the extent of their capabilities. Living on their own helps the individual achieve independence by gaining life skills, receiving health and safety education, and through community integration.
This approach promotes living skills and safety education, with an emphasis on community integration for individuals with developmental disabilities.
For many of our residents, Volunteers of America will be home for life. For others, it will be a place where they gain life and self-care skills that will allow them to move on to supported independent living in their own apartments or with their families.
In addition to supporting people with disabilities to learn and maintain skills of personal care and daily living, staff are responsible for ensuring that people become more involved in their own communities, as they:
- conduct their routine business interactions – shopping, banking, paying bills
- access educational, vocational, social, recreational, and leisure activities
- participate in events that reflect their interest
- plan special events such as vacations, parties and other celebrations
- connect (or reconnect) people with friends, neighbors and family members
- build relationships with others who are not paid to support them
