“It’s the day by day acts of kindness that change the world”
The Arthur B. Huot House, named in honor of the late U.S. Navy veteran Arthur “Skip” Huot, the program is operated in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs Grant and per Diem office. Arthur B. Huot believed that “It’s the day-by-day acts of kindness that changes the world” and that we should help our veterans as a community.
Volunteers of America embraces Mr. Huot’s idea and works closely with our partners, local veterans’ services, the Veterans Administration, Maine Bureau of Veteran Services, and other community agencies to provide a continuum of services to meet the needs of veterans.
The Arthur B Huot House is a designated Grant Per Diem program for transitional housing for unhoused Veterans. Veterans who qualify for our Huot House program must have HIGH Activity Daily Living skills score/capability, meet the current HUD definition of homeless, and have a U.S. Armed Services discharge status that is OTH or above, etc. These prerequisites to program placement are needed with the referral paperwork before an interview can be set up.
Huot House also offers a Clinical Treatment Model for veterans who are homeless and have a specific diagnosis of mental illness and/or substance use disorder. Clinically focused treatment is offered in conjunction with services effective in helping unhoused veterans secure permanent housing and increase income through employment and/or entitlements/benefits.
“They help coordinate my care and are always there to help. I still address my past every day… but it is getting better. I have learned a lot about myself and can see hope for the future.”
— Joe, former Huot House resident
