Dan a brawny, but gentle man, of nearly 30-years says he has studied and practiced Buddhism most of his life. "I took refuge vows as a teen, pledging to live in virtue." Dan tells us.

O God, when we are tempted to complain and despair about events of our lives teach us the value of looking around.

Perhaps someone among us begins this week awake and worried about the seeming racial divide within our nation that seems present today. In the midst of that worry may they feel held and safe as part of our VOA family.

Dear VOA Family, May you feel energized and excited about the work you do that makes a difference in the lives of all those you serve and work with this week. It is with a sense of humility and awe that I share a prayer sent to Volunteers Of America NNE from across the globe.

It's a fact: we all age. In some cultures, elders are revered as the most highly respected social class. Age is considered accomplishment. Sadly, in the United States, this is not so. Most older Americans, if asked, will say that their biggest fear is that they will become a burden to their families.

Our story is long and rich and widely unknown. But we aren't chasing fame or glory. Our lives are meant for service. For reaching out with mercy and compassion to those who thought they were beyond reach. We use our lives to make theirs better.

​Trudy and Rachel moved into Volunteers of America's Senior Housing in Portland within a few months of each other. Rachel and her little dachshund mix have an apartment upstairs and Trudy's is downstairs on the other side of the building.

With more than thirty programs in Northern New England, one of the challenges Volunteers of America faces is how to talk about who we are, in a succinct yet comprehensive way.

The York County Military Community Network will be helping the Department of Housing and Urban Development identify homeless individuals/families (Veterans and nonVeterans) to make sure that they are counted so that a fair-share of resources are sent to York County to assist them.
