Prayer for Martin Luther King Jr Day

prayer for week of Jan 16

O God, as the Psalmist wrote "let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight".

In a world where difference and diversity provides opportunity for us to embrace each other in greater ways, may we not shy from learning more about those we know so little.

When we are tempted to speak words that are unbecoming of a compassionate person, remind us that harsh words cannot be retracted by regret.

May we draw upon the life of Martin Luther King and speak truth to power simply by peacefully saying no to hate; no to injustice; no to discrimination with a commitment to learn more about those different from us.

As our VOA founders led the way, through your love and grace, in helping those rejected and powerless, call forth the best in us to do the same.

Give us courage, in our day, O God, to speak truth to power. May the words of our mouths, our actions and our compassion exemplify Divine love, today, and every day this week.

AMEN
