Recently, Yelp Helpers converged on Peaks Island to build raised beds at the Fay Garman House for growing vegetables and flowers. This is an annual event and they had such a great time, they've signed up for next May already. For more information or to sign up, http://www.yelp.com/biz/yelp-helps-2016-fay-garman-house-portland

Also in May was the United Way Day of Caring at Bayview Heights in Portland. Enthusiastic Key Bank employees showed up with shovels, gloves, smiles and go-power and spent the day cleaning and mulching the grounds and making the gardens gorgeous and weed-free. A round of much appreciated snacks at the end of the day topped off fun conversation and making plans for the next volunteer opportunity.

Our second United Day of Caring event occurred at the Paul Hazelton Houses in Saco when At-the-Ready employees from Hannaford and Unum showed up and worked on the gardens, painted curbs, built some shelves and did some general maintenance jobs.

It's a terrific way to meet new friends and feel great at the end of the day for helping. We'd love to have you join us. For future volunteer opportunities, contact Bill Browning 373-1140 or mailto:william.browning@voanne.org?subject=sign me up to volunteer!
