Remembering Mother's Day
prayer for week of May 9, 2016
O God on the day after Mother's Day we remember those who mother, and those who struggle with parenting. O God we remember that for some the holiday is about loss; for some it is about unfulfilled wishes; for some it is about pure joy and unconditional love; for some it is about abandonment; for some it is a combination of these things and more. What we do know in our humanity is that parenting is not perfect. We offer ourselves to you O God as we seek to do our best day by day.
O God we pray that every person within our VOA family will feel loved and accepted, and may they know there is room for all here. Help us, O God, to remember each other and honor each other's experiences. For those of us who have a loving and nurturing mother, we thank you.
For those of us whose mother is not with us any longer, we remember.
For those of us who had no mother, we remember.
For those whose mother was their best friend, we remember.
For those whose mother may have hurt them physically or emotionally we remember.
For those who are happy to mother other people's children, as an educator, an aunt, or a foster
parent, we remember.
For those of us who fear our mothering has not been enough, we remember.
O God, because of your love and grace, we are grateful for parenting in all its forms.
