Helping America's Most Vulnerable

Kathy's Celebration of Longevity and Health

Story by Marleigh Souza, Image by Michael Heiko

Kathy was a resident of Sawyer St. long before Volunteers of America bought the house. She has lived there for well over 24 years, and is happy to call it "a home, not a house."

Kathy likes to tell people that until Volunteers of America bought the house, she was afraid to say or do much of anything, for fear of being hospitalized. For the past 15 years, Kathy says, people have accepted her for who she is. We love who she is.

Kathy has taken on the role of Mother Hen in the house, always trying to help people. She takes time to listen to everyone when they are feeling down, and always has a kind word for everyone, no matter the time of day or night.

This is why we at Sawyer St. had a party for her. We wanted to honor this wonderful woman that we have all come to know and love for the past 15 years.
