TOGUS (WGME) -- Twenty-one homeless or disabled Maine veterans and their families will soon have a place to permanently call home.

The VA Maine Health Care System and Volunteers of America for Northern New England have partnered up to extend the Togus VA medical center's facility.

Friday's ground breaking ceremony kicked off construction for what will soon be 16 one-bedroom and five two-bedroom cabins in the woods.

A community center will also be built on the 11 acres of land. It'll provide residents with support services they need.

Dozens of local, state and national organizations have stepped up to contribute to the $4.2 million clinic expansion.
