Veterans Career House
Located in rural Biddeford, the Veterans Career Housee for 8 homeless veterans is a first of its kind in the State of Maine. It is a combined transitional housing and employment program designed to provide safe supportive housing to homeless, male veterans. Case management and transportation to and from work is provided on site.
Program Benefits:
Low-cost, stable housing in a rural setting which includes a private or semi-private room with shared living, dining, kitchen, recreation and bathroom areas. Heat, electricity and basic food staples included.
- Community events such as shared meals, meetings, workshops and special celebrations.
- On site sessions with a Career Counselor to help identify and achieve employment and training goals
- Mental health and substance abuse counseling available
- On site computers and instruction
- Limited transportation available for training, referrals, and employment
- Resource and referrals to community agencies.
Criteria for Applying:
- Single, male, homeless Veteran with other than a dishonorable dishcarge
- Eligible for VA services (will need to register with VA Togus)
- Ready, willing and able to secure full time emplyment and perform volunteer community service
- Clean and sober for a minimum of 30 days
- No recent history of violent behavior
- No history of sexual misconduct
- Ability to work cooperatively with house mates to perform daily/weekly chores in maintaining a safe, clean and friendly household
- Agreeable to random drug and alcohol testing
- Commitment to following the Program Participation Agreement
- Expect to pay Program Fees of 30% of gross monthly income
Application Process
- Request a Veterans' Career Housee (VCH) application by calling either contact number listed below
- Complete VCH applicaiton and return by either means listed at the bottom of the application form
- Upon receipt of application by VCH staff arrangements will be made to schedule an overnight, on site visit and preliminary evaluation
- Application and evaluation results will be forwarded to the Review Committee for probationary approval or disapproval for residency
- If approved, arrangements are made for a move in date under probationary status pending results of a full medical, physiological and substance abuse evaluation done by the VA within 30 days of move-in.
- If there are no vacancies at time of probationary approval, the applicant will be put on a waiting list.
