“Women leaving prison deserve a livable wage and a better life for their families. With your help, it will happen!”
June Koegel, President and CEO, Volunteers of America Northern New England
The prison gate has become a revolving door for women. However, we’re beginning to change that in Maine. Our Transition and Reunification program, in partnership with the Maine Department of Corrections, is giving women and their families a fighting chance. In fact, women in this program have a greater than 80 percent chance of a successful transition from prison. Now, thanks to the support of a wide coalition of organizations, we are “building” on that success. Through our Women Building Futures program, women will learn construction skills and become NCCER certified. They will construct modular homes in a new facility that will be located on the grounds of the Maine State Correctional Facility in Windham (see below). The houses they build will help provide an affordable home for low income Maine families.

Please join us and help make dreams come true!
If you would like to learn more about how you can help make the Women Building Futures program a reality, please contact Karen Clarke at Volunteers of America at 207-373-1140 (ext. 218). We need tools, building supplies, mentors and donations of any size. Together, we can help Maine women start a new life and provide a bright future for their families.
This program is possible in a large part to the generosity and support of: Sheridan Corporation; Associated Builders and Contractors of Maine; Maine Housing; Sunshine Ladies Foundation; Vermont Works for Women; Women Unlimited; and Maine Department of Labor; Women Work and Community and Habitat for Humanity. Thank you!
