Camp POSTCARD's 2012 Season to Offer More Programs
Organizers for Camp POSTCARD (“Police Officers Striving to Create and Reinforce Dreams”) have already plunged into planning the new 2012 season. “This June, there’s going to be a lot going on!” says Michael Coon, a camp director and Vice President of IT and Administrative Services for Volunteers of America.
Changing lives for nearly two decades
Now in its 18th season, the week-long camp aims to help deserving Maine 5th and 6th graders build relationships, learn life skills, change their perceptions of law enforcement, reduce high school dropout rates, and improve literacy and college acceptance rates. It will be held on the grounds of Camp Agassiz in Poland, Maine.
“Even now, in the depths of winter,” says Michael with a smile, “we’re lining up volunteers to manage the various camp programs, sending out applications for leaders, and scheduling events and presenters.” The camp is staffed entirely by volunteers, including more than 60 law enforcement officers, social workers, public safety officers, and Volunteers of America staff.
Educational — and fun!
In addition to the camp’s traditional activities and 2011’s popular new “Fit, Fed, and Fun for Life” program (which aims to combat childhood obesity), this year’s camp will feature an all-new Science Day. “We’re working with the local 4H cooperative extension service to plan a range of manageable science projects we can do with the campers,” says Michael. “Our aim is to set up several ‘stations’ for them to explore and experience in groups.”
Strength in numbers
Camp POSTCARD is a long-term partnership between the Maine Sheriffs’ Association, the Maine D.A.R.E.® Officers Association, the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, and Volunteers of America. Together, these organizations provide an innovative and successful substance-abuse and crime-prevention program for Maine youth through direct involvement with, and mentoring by, law enforcement and criminal justice professionals.
“Thanks to donors and our other support, there is no charge for any child to attend,” Michael concludes. “For most of the kids it’s a dream come true.”
