Salon and Staff Donate Free Haircuts to Youth in Transition

The Madison Avenue Salon on Main Street in Auburn is usually closed on Monday. Recently, they opened their doors and the owner and staff donated their time to provide free haircuts and manicures to area youth who are in transition (often called homeless for lack of a better word). It was an incredible event and everyone was "looking sharp" afterwards. We are grateful to everyone at the Madison Avenue Salon for their help. More>

The project is bringing more than $10 million in federal funds—including stimulus money through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act—into Maine. It is also one of the biggest new construction efforts in the area. The project will save many existing local jobs, create new ones and save money for taxpayers. More>
Major League Baseball's Man of the Year Visited Maine Action Team

In 2007, our Action Team Captains were at Fenway Park for the annual recognition day and Curtis Granderson was at the park because Detroit was playing the Red Sox. Before the game, he came over and signed autographs and talked with our team captains. This was quite extraordinary and made a major league impression on all of us. In addition, Mr Granderson is now a member of the New York Yankees. Congratulations to Mr. Granderson and thanks for the memories! More>
If you are responding to help residents of the Bradley Street fire.
Right now, we are taking care of the immediate needs of our residents. Everyone got out safely which is a blessing -- even our residents' pets! Most have lost everything in the fire and we have lost all of our office equipment and supplies. However, that can be replaced. If you are interested in helping, you have three options:
The two photographs below are of the building which is a total loss and State Fire Marshall Michael Keeley with one of the resident's cats he rescued who is very happy! We are grateful to all of the firemen and women who fought the fire.

Pierce Atwood Team Works Miracles on Peaks Island.
Recently, attorneys and staff took to the community for a dedicated day of service to New England charitable service organizations. A team of two dozen staff members spent the day at our Fay Garman House on Peaks Island. We've created a special page with photographs dedicated to showing off how proud we are of their work and how grateful we are for their generosity. More>
Herbie Comes Full Circle
A very moving video we created recently talks about Herbie and how Volunteers of America helped him as a child in the 1940's and how we changed his life. Now Herbie has come full circle and is a resident in one of our affordable senior housing communities in Maine. If you have three minutes, we invite you to see how important it is to be there for our seniors and how having affordable housing can change their lives. View video>
